maybe cable just needs moving back into position

The cable has either snapped or the hooks at the end of the cable has become detached. If you trace the cable you will know either way

I had a similar problem with my VW Van, it could be this: Open the bonnet, locate where your accelerator comes out of the bulkhead (pedal end) or pick it up along the way and follow the cable to where it goes to the engine/pump etc (where it ends)
On my VW there was a tensioner -a cylindrical screw and a rubber grub- the rubber grub had given way so there was no tension in the accelerator cable and so the pedal dropped to the floor. Being different makes you may have to find a new or second hand part or a different way to fix it, but what I did was find a 15mm wide tie rap and put it in place of the grub.
The solution may not be the same but if you can get hold of the cable and there is movement rather than the cable being taut then it may be same problem.
