   Yeah… that would do it. A tranny is not something that you can just take apart and then put together. There are so many ways thing can go wrong.

   you may have the shifter linkage back on the wrong way ,check that ,it may be out of alignment,that will cause one to do that,i hope you didn’t take the entire gear box apart,those are kind of complicated to work on and can cause many problems if not put back together the right way,good luck.
