my renault scenic is running on 1 cylinders can someone tell me whats causing it and how much it could cost to?

The whole car suddenly started to lose power then sounded like i had a hole in the exhaust. Spark plugs are fine and so are the coils. The fuel filter is fine. Think it might be the valves.
I apologise it is only running on two cylinders not one, typing error,,,,oops.
I haven't drove it since I struggled to get it home

Are you sure about the coils?
This is a common fault on Scenics.
    I’ve had three. Mk 1,2 & 3.
The later ones both failed and the dealer told me that they hold a stock of coils because it is so common.
If faulty you will need all 4 coils as they are not changeable singly and the parts cost over £200

I’ve since traded it for a Toyota.

    For your info:
Do not drive your car on less the number of cylinders it is supposed to. The unburnt fuel will evenually be passed into the catalytic convertor which will in turn need to be replaced. This normally costs around £400.

It cannot possibly be running on ONE cylinder as there would be no power after the ignition stroke to keep it running.

The minimum it could run on is 2 and then I doubt that it would.

It is probably Ignition coil or coils(more than one), spark plugs or spark plug leads. Or a combination of these components. I work in a garage and these are the most common causes.

Micro cracks in the leads can be difficult to spot, spark plugs wear away or can just fail altogether, and so can coils. But it dosen’t end there im afraid, there are a few other things that can cause similar symptoms.

Failed relays, wiring loom corrosion, vacume pipe cracked, fuel contamination, fly wheel sensor, collapsed catalytic converter, blocked air intake pipe.

Take it to your local dealer or your local backstreet garage. If they are any good at their job they should find and rectify the fault fairly quckly.

are you sure about the coil condition?

its very common on these renaults, change all 4 if you dont the coils which are working now will breakdown within a short time.
