how to check auto transmission fluid on a renault scenic megane?

I need to check and possibly change my automatic transmission fluid, how do I do this, as I cannot find where it is on my car, a Renault Scenic megane. There is also a light on the dashboard that wont go out, its a square shape with a zigzag line in it, and I cannot get top gear.

I don’t know where the dipstick is – but there will be one. Find it.

Once located, do for a drive – get the engine properly warmed. Stop and run through D,N,R and end up in park. Kill the engine.

Allow oil to settle for approx five minutes. Remove the dipstick you correctly identified earlier, wipe it clean, reinsert and withdraw it. Read the oil level against the markings or notches on the dipstick.

Whilst you’re at it, inspect it and smell it. If it’s brown (probably will be by now) or if it contains ANY specks of solid material and/or smells slightly burnt, then you need to replace all of it. If it’s still a lovely red (doubt it), then carefully top it up through the dipstick tube using a funnel and a great deal of patience. Use the correctly specified ATF-type oil.

If you can’t select top gear, then it sounds as if the fluid level is too low. Fix that problem first and then see if the light’s gone out.

Take it to a local independent garage and let them change your fluid for you if you’re at all uncomfortable with DIY. Do not overfill the gearbox. Ever.
