How are roof bars fixed to a Renault Scenic?

I have a 2001 Renault Megane Scenic and would like to fit roof rails across the roof. The car has the plastic strips running from front to back of the roof do these have to be removed to fit the roof bars or do they push down in or something similar. I can buy the roof bars for a reasonable price on ebay and don't want to have to buy them and have them fitted at Halfords or anything like that
